Vessel of Dreams
This series of pieces was made for London Craft Week 2024, exhibiting with Contemporary Applied Arts for their exhibition ‘Traces : Imagined Histories in Clay, Silver and Thread’.
Vessels hold imagery of wonder and intrigue within many cultures, conveying the promise of undiscovered realms and lands; dreams of hope, progress and freedom. Representing threads of the journey through life and spiritual voyages.
Through human history the vessel has held hope of sanctuary and safety, sometimes living up to these dreams and yet also falling short at great human cost, through shipwreck, exploitation or cruelty. Within ceramics, the vessel at a fundamental level has sustained life by storing water, transporting goods and for cooking. It is an archetypal form of habit and ritual, both containing and bounded by space.
